The 1985 Canadian Grand Prix was a Formula One motor race held at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on June 16, 1985. It was the fifth round of the 1985 FIA Formula One World Championship.

Qualifying

For the first time since the F1 circus arrived in Europe for the second round of the season (the Portuguese Grand Prix), Ayrton Senna did not top the time sheets in either qualifying session. Ferrari's Michele Alboreto was fastest on the Friday and Senna's team mate Elio de Angelis fastest in the final qualifying session to snatch the pole. Senna though was second fastest in both sessions making it an all Lotus front row for the first time since the 1978 Austrian Grand Prix where Ronnie Peterson and Mario Andretti qualified the revolutionary ground effect Lotus 79 in first and second respectively.

This would prove to be the final ever qualifying 1-2 for the famous team founded in 1952 by Colin Chapman, and the final time de Angelis would qualify on pole or indeed on the front row before his untimely death from a testing accident 11 months after the 1985 Canadian Grand Prix.
