Roger Federer was the defending champion but lost in the second round to World No. 116 Sergiy Stakhovsky in a massive upset.[1] Stakhovsky was unable to build on his effort and lost in the next round in 4 sets to Jürgen Melzer.[2] Federer's loss marked the first time since the 2004 French Open, when he lost to Gustavo Kuerten in the third round, that he had failed to reach at least the quarterfinals in a Grand Slam event. It was also Federer's earliest exit in this tournament since 2002, and the first time that Federer lost to a player ranked lower than 100 since his loss to then World No. 101 Richard Gasquet at the 2005 Monte Carlo Masters.[3]

In the first round, World No. 135 Steve Darcis produced another of the biggest upsets in recent years by defeating World No. 5 and two-time Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal in straight sets. This came a year after Nadal's equally big upset in the second round of the 2012 Championships against Lukáš Rosol. It was the first time ever Nadal lost in the first round of a Grand Slam tournament.[4] There was no follow-up match from Darcis as he withdrew from the tournament because of a right shoulder injury he sustained during the Nadal match.[5] As a result, it marked the first time since the 2004 French Open that neither Federer nor Nadal appeared in the quarterfinals of a grand slam.

Further history was made at the championships for American and Polish players. For the first time since the 1912 Wimbledon Championships no American men advanced past the second round.[6] For the first time ever in a Grand Slam, a Polish man made it to the semifinal stage after Jerzy Janowicz defeated countryman Łukasz Kubot in the quarterfinals.[7]

In the final match, Andy Murray defeated Novak Djokovic in straight sets to become the first British man to win the Wimbledon singles title since Fred Perry won in 1936, ending a 76-year drought,[A 1] as well as the first British winner in singles since 1977. He was also the first Scot to win the Wimbledon title since Harold Mahony in 1896.[9] Djokovic had advanced to the final after an epic and gruelling 5-set semifinal against Juan Martín Del Potro. At 4 hours and 43 minutes it made history as the longest semifinal ever contested at Wimbledon, breaking the previous record set by Boris Becker and Ivan Lendl at the 1989 Championships.[10]

Annotations

  1. Although commonly reported as a 77-year drought – as there are 77 years between Perry's 1936 win and Murray's 2013 win – Perry remained the Wimbledon Men's Singles champion until the 1937 Championships.[8]
