The 2016 Rugby Championship will be the fifth edition of the expanded annual southern hemisphere Rugby Championship, featuring Argentina, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. The competition is operated by SANZAAR, a joint venture of the four countries' national unions.
The tournament is known for sponsorship reasons as The Castle Rugby Championship in South Africa, The Investec Rugby Championship in New Zealand, The Castrol Edge Rugby Championship in Australia and The Personal Rugby Championship in Argentina.
The 2016 Championship will return to its full 6-round format, having been reduced in 2015 to 3 rounds due to that year's Rugby World Cup. It will also be the first tournament in which Argentina is a full member of SANZAAR, as well as the first in which that country has had a team competing in Super Rugby, competing against Australia, New Zealand and South African opposition from February until August. Also, for the first time since the creation of the championship as the Tri Nations in 1996, a match will be played outside the SANZAAR countries. On 5 April 2016, it was announced that Argentina's home match against Australia on 8 October would be held at Twickenham in London.[1]
