On January 8, 2020, Iran launched missiles into Iraq, targeting American military facilities.[1][2] The Pentagon confirmed that both the Al Asad and Erbil airbases in Iraq were hit by over a "dozen missiles launched by Iran."[3][4]

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said the attacks were a response to the assassination of Qassem Soleimani by the U.S.[5]

On 8 January 2020, multiple media sources reported that ballistic missiles had struck Al Asad Airbase in Al Anbar Governorate, Western Iraq, the largest U.S. base in the area.[6] Sources report the missiles were launched by Iran in retaliation for the killing of Qasem Soleimani in the earlier 2020 Baghdad International Airport airstrike.[6]

According to Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA), Iran fired "tens of ground-to-ground missiles" at the base and claimed responsibility for the attack.[6] US officials confirmed that these ballistic missiles were fired from inside Iran at multiple targets in Iraq. The airbase in Irbil, Kurdistan was attacked as well.[7][6] ISNA stated that the attacks were an opening to a military operation known as "Martyr Soleimani".[8][9][6] ISNA also stated that 'Oh Zahra' was the code used to launch the missiles.[6] The casualties of the missile strike has yet to be made public.
