478 Tergeste is an asteroid orbiting the Sun. It belongs to the Main Belt, which means that its orbit is between those of Mars and Jupiter.

"Tergeste" is an alternate name of the city of Trieste; the asteroid's discoverer, Luigi Carnera, was for many years director of Trieste Observatory.
