Adlai E. Stevenson High School is a public high school located in Sterling Heights, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. Stevenson is a part of Utica Community Schools, Michigan's second largest school district.
The school was named for Adlai E. Stevenson, a two-time candidate for President of the United States and former United Nations ambassador. In athletics, the school is often referred to as "Sterling Heights Stevenson". The school's mascot is the "Titans".
School information
As of fall 2012, the school has an enrollment of 2,881, making it the third largest high school in Michigan—when including grades 10-12—and the largest high school in Utica Community Schools.[1] Stevenson's principal is Steven Pfannes and has three assistant principals: Alison Hildebrand, Scott May, and Larry Gray. Stevenson is also a State of Michigan and a National Exemplary Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.
Parts of the school have been renovated including new hallways, and several new classrooms.
Stevenson's newspaper is called "The Vanguard" and its yearbook is called "The Ambassador"; both are Sparty Award winners.
Stevenson High School's motto is "The School of Champions".
As of the 2013-2014 school year, Stevenson had a total enrollment of 1995. Of that, 1718 were white (86.12%), 149 were African American (7.47%), 78 were Asian or Pacific Islander (3.91%), and 33 were Hispanic (1.65%).[2]
Academic teams
One of Stevenson's most successful academic team is the debate team. The first coach Gloria Lauderback (1968–1974) took the fledgling program from obscurity to regional success. In 1975, Robert McBroom (1975–2000), a former SHS debater, became the head coach. During the 25 years McBroom coached, Stevenson teams qualified for the Michigan Interscholastic Forensic Association [1] Class A state finals 24 times. In 1982, the team made the Class A semi-finals; in 1983, the finals; and, in 2000, under the direction of Jeff Lopo, the team was the state champion.
Other academic teams include Auto, Book, Chess, Debate, DECA, Driven, Environmental, French, Future Nurses, German, Gay-Straight Alliance, Journalism, Key, NHS, Politics Club, Quiz Bowl, Science Olympiad, Scrapbook, Social Studies Olympiad, Spanish, Stevenson Players, VICA, and Yearbook.
Sports
Stevenson's Titan Marching Band (consisting of 9th - 12th grade students) has received twenty-four straight Class AA, Division I ratings while competing in the MSBOA festivals under the direction of Mr. Michael Sekich.
Sports at Stevenson include lacrosse, competitive cheerleading, football baseball, basketball, bowling, cross country, dance team, golf, ice hockey, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track, volleyball, and wrestling.
Professional football linebacker and Super Bowl XLV champion Frank Zombo of the Kansas City Chiefs hails from Stevenson High School. In addition to NHL Professional Hockey players Derian and Kevin Hatcher.
