Air Force Aid Society (AFAS) is a non-profit, charitable organization that is the official charity of the United States Air Force. The organization is headquartered in Arlington, Virginia.

Mission

The three-pronged charter supports the Air Force mission by

  1. providing worldwide emergency assistance to members and their families,
  2. sponsoring educational assistance programs, and
  3. offering base community programs that improve Airman/family welfare.[3]

As of early 2015, AFAS was paying for a staff of 23 people, all at its headquarters in Arlington, Virginia.

Relation to other military relief societies

In 2003, the Armed Forces Relief Trust, was formed to assist the four military aid societies - Air Force Aid, Army Emergency Relief, the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, and the Coast Guard Mutual Assistance, by providing a single place to receive donations for the entire U.S. Armed Services.[4]

While Army Emergency Relief receives office space from the Army, AFAS does not receive the same benefit from the Air Force. Unlike the other three military relief societies, the Air Force Assistance Fund supports four Air Force Charities, instead of only the official charity of the service branch.
