Alex Graham (cartoonist)

Alexander S. Graham (Patrick, Glasgow, 2 March 1917 – December 4, 1991[1]) was a British cartoonist who created the comic strip, Fred Basset. In a 1953 cartoon for The New Yorker he originated the phrase "Take me to your leader".[2]

Biography

He was educated at the Dumfries Academy.

Graham's best known creation, Fred Basset, is a comic strip about a male basset hound. The cartoon was published first in the Daily Mail on 8 July 1963.[3] It has since been syndicated around the world.[3]

Fred was published in the UK newspaper Daily Mail and more recently The Mail On Sunday from 1963 to the present.[4]

Alex Graham died on 3 December 1991 (aged 78).
