Alexander Ferdinand Ludwig Andrae (17 December 1821 – 13 March 1903), better known as Andrae-Roman, was a German farmer and politician.

Biography

Andrae was born in Hannover, the son of a merchant and landowner and studied in Berlin and Bonn. During his studies, he became a member of the Fridericia Bonn fraternity in 1843 and was in contact with Ernst Moritz Arndt, Friedrich Christoph Dahlmann and Gottfried Kinkel.

He was married to Helene Flügge. In 1845, her father Wilhelm Flügge acquired the Ramelow estate in the district of Kolberg-Körlin in Pomerania, divided it into two estates - Niedergut and Obergut - managed the Niedergut and sold the Obergut to his son-in-law. Alexander Andrae and his wife moved to the Obergut Ramelow in 1845.[1]

A few years later Andrae sold the upper estate Ramelow to a brother-in-law. In 1851 he bought the manor Roman with Buchwald, also located in the district of Kolberg-Körlin, where he founded Waldhaus, an asylum for released prisoners, in 1853.[2]

He was friends with Bismarck,[3][4] who made him join the circle of the Pomeranian revival movement in 1846. He worked in the Inner Mission of Pomerania, was active as an author, and from 1848/49 was a member of the Second Chamber of the Landtag of Prussia.

In 1881, after selling Roman, he lived in Stettin. There, too, he was involved in the Inner Mission. He was a board member of the Kückenmühler Anstalten, the Magdalenenstift, an institution for the education of neglected girls, and the Stettiner Stadtmission. He died in Stettin in 1903.

Eleven children were born of his marriage. His daughter Marie Andrae was a writer, educator and nurse. She also published under the pseudonym Marie Andrae-Romanek. His son Hans was a well-known lawyer.
