Alexandre Grendene Bartelle

Alexandre Grendene Bartelle (born January 2, 1950 in Farroupilha, Brazil) is a Brazilian businessman and billionaire. In 1971,[1] co-founded Grendene, the world's largest manufacturer of sandals, with his brother, Pedro Grendene Bartelle.[2] According to Forbes, he was worth US$1.86 billion as of May 2016.[2]

Biography

Early life and education

Bartelle was born on January 2, 1950[1] in Farroupilha.[3] He had a twin brother, Pedro Grendene Bartelle.[2] As a child, he drew inspiration from his grandfather, a "prosperous entrepreneur who helped him start his own business before he turned 20."[3] He studied at Universidade de Caxias do Sul, graduating with a bachelor's degree in Law.[1]

Career

In 1971, Alexandre and Pedro co-founded Grendene.[1] Their grandfather lent them capital to purchase plastic injection molding machines and hire five employees.[4] The company became the world's largest manufacturer of sandals and one of the largest footwear manufacturers and exporters in Brazil.[1] By May 2016, he was worth US$1.86billion.[2]

Personal life

Bartelle currently lives in Porto Alegre and has seven children.[2] In 2015, he donated funds for the construction of a veterinary hospital in Porto Alegre.[1][2] He owns a Limited Editions 199 yacht and a Falcon 7X jet.[2]
