Andrés Mignucci FAIA (born 1957, Ponce, Puerto Rico[1][2]) is a Puerto Rican architect and urbanist. His work has received recognition for its integration of the disciplines of architecture, urban design and landscape architecture in the creation of public spaces with a sense of place, human scale, and environmental responsibility. In 2005 Andrés Mignucci was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects.[3] In 2012, he was awarded the Henry Klumb Award by the Puerto Rico College of Architects.

Education and Career

Mignucci studied architecture at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee (BS Arch (Honors), 1979) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) receiving a Master of Architecture degree in 1982.

In 1980 he worked with N. John Habraken in The Grunsfeld Variations, a research project dealing with the thematic design of urban tissues.[4] From 1983 to 1986 he worked as urban designer with Stephen Carr and Kevin A. Lynch in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1988, Mignucci returned to Puerto Rico establishing Andrés Mignucci Arquitectos in San Juan. Mignucci divides his time between practice, teaching, and research. In 1990, along with architects Jorge Rigau and Emilio Martinez, Mignucci co-directed a collaborative Puerto Rico-Dominican Republic research study on Dominican Architecture in the early 20th century. The work received the 'Research Award at the Bienal de Arquitectura de Santo Domingo and was published under the title Arquitectura Dominicana 1890-1930.[5] In 1992, as President of the American Institute of Architects-Puerto Rico, Mignucci curated the exhibition and published Arquitectura Contemporanea en Puerto Rico 1976-1992.[6]

Mignucci's main contribution has been in the field of public space design. His major projects include PARQUE DE LOS NIÑOS and PARQUE DE SANTURCE, large scale landscape restoration projects along the Caño de Martin Peña; the El Condado public space system, which includes the PLAZA ANTONIA QUIÑONES, LA VENTANA AL MAR, PLAZA LAS NEREIDAS and PLAZA DEL INDIO; the restoration of PARQUE LUIS MUÑOZ RIVERA (Luis Muñoz Rivera Park), San Juan's oldest public space; and the PLAZA DE ISABELA, the town square in the northwest municipality of Isabela.

During 2008 Mignucci collaborated with artist María de Mater O'Neill in the project Painting for a Specific Floor as part of an Artist in Residence fellowship at the CASAPOLI Cultural Center in Chile. The project was published under the title Pintura para un piso específico.[7] In 2008, together with Dutch theorist N. John Habraken, Mignucci was Visiting Professor at the ETSAB School of Architecture's Laboratorio de la Vivienda del Siglo XXI - Masters Program in Barcelona. Their course was the subject of the book Supports: Housing and City published by Universitat Politécnica de Catalunya in 2009.[8]

In 2010-11, Mignucci was Visiting Scholar and Maxfield Lecturer at the School of Architecture Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. In 2011, Mignucci wrote "Jesús Eduardo Amaral, Arquitecto" published by the Colegio de Arquitectos y Arquitectos Paisajistas de Puerto Rico. The book is a monograph on Jesús Eduardo Amaral, one of the principal figures of mid-twentieth century architecture in Puerto Rico and founder in 1966 of the School of Architecture at the University of Puerto Rico.[9]

For the past five years, Mignucci's research has centered on architectural education and design methods focusing on thematic design and the everyday environment. The resulting work, co-written with N. John Habraken and Jonathan Teicher, is titled Conversations with Form: A Workbook for Student's of Architecture[10]), (Routledge, 2014).[11]

Andrés Mignucci currently teaches architectural design and theory at the School of Architecture of the University of Puerto Rico.

Honors

Mignucci was awarded the National Architecture Prize in 2001 for the Parque de los Niños ( Children's Park) in San Juan, Puerto Rico and in 2002 for the School of Fine Arts in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico.
