António Lúcio Magessi Tavares[1] (30 April 1806 – 7 December 1877) was a Portuguese Army officer and political writer. Defender of the Miguelist cause during the Portuguese Civil War, he distinguished himself as a polemicist later in life.

Biography

António Lúcio was born in Estremoz, the son of the Miguelist general António Tavares Magessi then stationed in the garrison of that town. He attended the Army School and started a military career in the cavalry, which he followed until he reached the rank of Captain.

Made a nobleman of the royal house by charter of July 6, 1825, he was one of the supporters of the legitimacy of Miguel I of Portugal, distinguishing himself, like his father, as one of the officers who opposed the Constitutional Charter of 1826 and who participated in several revolts that year.

He remained loyal to the legitimist cause during the Portuguese Civil War, and was one of the officers who only surrendered at the Concession of Evoramonte. He was then expelled from the Army together with other military men who supported Don Miguel, and began a career as a polemicist and writer.

Magessi Tavares was an assiduous collaborator of the Catholic and legitimist press, such as A Fé Católica (1861–1866), a bi-monthly newspaper directed by António Joaquim Ribeiro Gomes de Abreu. He was also a noted pamphleteer, writing in particular against liberal historian Alexandre Herculano.[2][3]

António Lúcio Magessi Tavares died in Castelo de Vide.
