The first Anti-Masonic Congress of Trento began on 26 September 1896 in Trento, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and was organised by the International Anti-Masonic League (founded in Rome in 1893), presided over by the Prince of Löwenstein.

Four working sessions were scheduled during the congress.[lower-alpha 1] Four topics were discussed at the conference: Masonic doctrine, Masonic action, prayer and anti-Masonic action. The congress recommended that the Catholic press publish books and pamphlets against Freemasonry, accessible to the general public, and that a permanent study commission be set up. It was also established that any criticism of the clergy was tantamount to propaganda in favour of the "Freemason sect". The Acts of the International Anti-Masonic Congress were published in Tournai in 1897 by Desclée de Brouwer.[1]

On the opening day, 36 bishops, 50 episcopal delegates and 700 delegates from various Catholic organisations met. Among the various delegations were those from France and Austria, each with more than 50 people. The opening of the congress took place in the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore.

In the morning session of the last day of the Congress, Commendatore Pietro Pacelli (editor of the Roman weekly La Voce della veità) and Vice-President of the Congress — presented a motion of applause for the Carlist deputy Juan Vázquez de Mella, who had presented a request to the Cortes of Madrid that Freemasonry be declared illegal, factious and a traitor to the fatherland, with the immediate removal of all Freemasons from public office. Carlos VII, travelled to Trento to attend the closing Te Deum, accompanied by Doña Marie-Berthe and the infanta Alicia.
