1. Arrondissement of Jonzac, (subprefecture: Jonzac) with 114 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 52,269 in 1990, and was 51,675 in 1999, a decrease of 1.14%.
2. Arrondissement of Rochefort, (subprefecture: Rochefort) with 79 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 153,256 in 1990, and was 161,340 in 1999, an increase of 5.27%.
3. Arrondissement of La Rochelle, (prefecture of the Charente-Maritime department: La Rochelle) with 57 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 166,011 in 1990, and was 184,728 in 1999, an increase of 11.27%.
4. Arrondissement of Saintes, (subprefecture: Saintes) with 107 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 104,486 in 1990, and was 108,989 in 1999, an increase of 4.31%.
5. Arrondissement of Saint-Jean-d'Angély, (subprefecture: Saint-Jean-d'Angély) with 115 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 51,124 in 1990, and was 50,292 in 1999, a decrease of 1.63%.
