Bannatyne's was formed in December 1996 in response to the growing consumer demand for member’s only health club facilities around the UK. The first club was opened at Ingleby Barwick, near Stockton-on-Tees, and from there, over 61 branches have been opened across the UK. The head office for the Bannatyne's Group is at Haughton Road, Darlington, County Durham.

Typically clubs consist of a full gymnasium, swimming pool, spa, sauna and steam room, along with dance, spinning and aerobic studios. In addition, most clubs also have sunbeds and a bar/restaurant area.

Most Bannatyne health clubs offer a range of exercise classes including spin classes, high impact aerobics, yoga, and t'ai chi.

Like most health clubs in the UK, Bannatyne's operates on a membership scheme, where members pay a joining fee and either an annual or monthly fee. Non members can be admitted to a Bannatyne's club accompanied by a member for a small fee, however there is a limit on the number of visits for a non-member.

On 9 August 2006, Bannatyne Fitness Ltd acquired the LivingWell Premier Health club chain from the Hilton Hotel UK Group, taking the Bannatynes Health club chain to over 60 locations.
