The Barack Obama Presidential Center[1] is the planned presidential library in Chicago of Barack Obama, the 44th President of the United States. The center will be located on the South Side of Chicago. Once completed, it will become the 14th site in the National Archives and Records Administration's presidential library system.[2] The center will be constructed at the behest of nonprofit Barack Obama Foundation, which was officially set up for this purpose.

History

The Barack Obama Foundation board consists of: Marty Nesbitt, a close friend from Chicago; J. Kevin Poorman, president and CEO of PSP Capital Partners; David Plouffe; Obama's half-sister Maya Soetoro-Ng; venture capital financier, John Doerr; Studio Museum in Harlem Director and Chief Curator, Thelma Golden; and fundraiser and former White House staffer, Juliana Smoot.[3][4] Barack Obama has a home in Hyde Park.[5][6][lower-alpha 1]

The foundation was formally established in January 2014.[7] Several organizations, including the University of Chicago, the University of Illinois at Chicago, the University of Hawaii, and Columbia University submitted proposals for the honor of hosting the institution.[8][9]

On May 12, 2015, it was announced by the Barack Obama Foundation and Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel that the Barack Obama Presidential Center, as well as its foundation, will be located in Chicago and associated with the University of Chicago. The University of Chicago beat out proposals submitted by the University of Illinois at Chicago, Columbia University in New York City, and the University of Hawaii. A site in Chicago for the presidential library has yet to be chosen, but possible locations include Jackson Park and Washington Park, the 3rd and 4th parks in Chicago both located on the South Side. A design committee is assisting in the selection of the architect.[10]
