Barnstaple Long Bridge
Barnstaple Long Bridge is a medieval bridge linking Tawstock with Barnstaple in North Devon, England.
History
The bridge was first constructed around 1280[1] as Barnstaple's main bridge across the River Taw, and has since been modified several times, most recently in 1963. It is a Grade I listed building. [2]
Structure
Long Bridge has 16 pointed masonry arches, varying in span from 5.5m to 7.9m. A document refers to repairs in 1333, and the bridge was partially destroyed in 1437 and 1646[1] The bridge has also been widened and lengthened several times and, in 1963, modified by removing the Victorian ironworks to give the bridge an image identical to how it would have looked between 1796 and 1832.
