Bayman (バイマン Baiman?) is a fictional character from the Dead or Alive video game series. Debuting in the first game in the series in 1996 as an antagonist, he is a former Russian commando who specializes in the Combat Sambo fighting style. He first joins the DOA tournament to assassinate Fame Douglas, and later joins the Dead or Alive 3 tournament to retaliate against Victor Donovan for the attempt on his life by a sniper.

Bayman did not appear in initial releases of Dead or Alive 2, instead being replaced by a new character, Leon, whose moveset was nearly identical to that of Bayman's moveset in the first game. However, he was reintroduced in DOA2: Hardcore, and has appeared in every mainline installment in the series since; ironically enough, Leon has not canonically appeared in the series since Dead or Alive 3, instead appearing as a secret character in Dead or Alive 4, and not appearing at all in Dead or Alive 5 or Dead or Alive 6 (even though he did appear in Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate and Dead or Alive 5 Last Round).

Since the series' debut, Bayman has been voiced by Hisao Egawa in Dead or Alive and Banjo Ginga in all subsequent appearances since the character was reintroduced in the Japanese Dreamcast version of Dead or Alive 2. In the English dubs, he has had numerous voice actors portray him, with Matthew Mercer having taken up the role since Dead or Alive 5

History

Before Dead or Alive

Bayman was born and raised in the Soviet Union. As a young boy, he saw his parents die in an aerial bombing. He aspired to join the military and became one of the Soviet Union's highly trained commandos. But before he saw any action, the Soviet Union collapsed. Realizing the new regime would have no use for him, Bayman slipped through the cracks of the reformation and took up the life of a mercenary, putting his skills to good use in all manner of lethal assignments. He found particular pleasure in assassinations, especially challenging or high-profile assignments.

Dead or Alive

His dream assignment came to him. Bayman entered into the first "Dead or Alive World Tournament" with the objective of assassinating its organizer, the renowned Fame Douglas, chairman of DOATEC. His task completed, Bayman fled, now branded an outlaw.

Dead or Alive 2

When the next tournament was announced, Bayman caught word of one of the entrants; an Italian mercenary named Leon. Bayman risked capture to enter the tournament again, hoping to find and challenge his old acquaintance.
