Birkenshaw is a village in the county of West Yorkshire, England. It lies at the crossroads between the A58 Leeds to Halifax road and the A651 Bradford to Heckmondwike road.
Despite its proximity to Bradford and having a Bradford postal address and partly Bradford dial code (most of the village uses the 01274 phone number, although part uses the 0113 Leeds prefix), Birkenshaw forms part of Kirklees Metropolitan Borough.[1] It is home to the headquarters of the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.[2]
Birkenshaw was the birthplace of Terry Uttley and Alan Silson, founding members of the band Smokie. The Tetley family of malters, from whom brewer Joshua Tetley emerged hailed from Birkenshaw.[3]
There are two schools in the village; Birkenshaw Primary School and BBG Academy. There is also a church and two playgrounds.
