Blake Austin (born 1 February 1991) is an Australian professional rugby league footballer of Portuguese descent,[2] who currently plays for the Canberra Raiders of the National Rugby League. He primarily plays at five-eighth, but can also fill in at lock and fullback. Austin is a Portugal international and City Origin representative.

Playing career

Early Career

A junior baseball player and sprinter, Austin decided to focus on rugby league from the age of 12,[3] playing his early football with Doonside Roos in Western Sydney. In 2009, he represented the Australian Schoolboys team whilst attending St Dominic's College, Penrith. [4]

2011-2012

With the Panthers incapable of making the semi-finals in 2011, Austin was chosen to play from the bench in the last two games of the season, scoring a try in his second game. Before the start of the 2012 season, the Penrith Panthers announced a two-year deal with Austin to keep him playing with the Panthers until the end of the 2014 season.[5] Austin started the beginning of the season as a substitute, but from round eight was chosen at five-eighth. He played in thirteen games in 2012, and kicked a total of 8 from 9 attempts at goal.

2013

In 2013, Austin played one game at halfback, but soon after suffered a foot injury and failed to make another first grade appearance.[6] In August it was announced that Austin would be joining Wests Tigers on a two-year contract. Future coach Mick Potter described him as, "a player with plenty of potential. He can cover centre, half, five-eighth and lock and is also an excellent goal kicker."[7]

2014

Starting the 2014 season in NSW Cup, Austin was said to be "dominating" the lower grade.[8] He made his first grade debut in round 6, playing five-eighth after Braith Anasta was suspended, and scoring a try. The next week he was a late inclusion on the bench after Liam Fulton withdrew with a shoulder injury, and scored another try in the Wests Tigers' fourth consecutive win. Austin continued to be chosen on the bench, until moving to five-eighth in July after Anasta suffered a career-ending bicep injury.[9] He appeared in every game for the remaider of the year, scoring seven tries. Commentator Peter Sterling named him as one of the bargain buys of the season, saying it was, "obvious he’s a natural footballer with good skills and an ability to play what’s in front of him."[10] On 14 October 2014, Austin was released by the Wests Tigers to sign a three-year deal with the Canberra Raiders starting in 2015.[11][12]

2015

Austin entered the Canberra side as a starting line-up five-eighth and was selected to play the first game of the season against the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks. Austin set up and scored his first try with the club in the Raiders Round 3 20-22 loss to the St. George Illawarra Dragons. After several tries and a countless number of strong performances, Austin scored his first career hat-trick against the Knights in Round 18, incredibly scoring all three tries within eleven minutes of the match. On the 28th of September, Austin was announced the 2015 five-eighth of the year, making him the first Raider to win that particular award. Austin finished the 2015 season playing a total of 23 matches, 16 line-breaks, 7 try-assists and 14 tries.

Representative Honours

In 2009, Blake was given the opportunity to play for the Australia Schoolboys.[citation needed] He has played for the Portugal national side and for City origin in 2015.

In 2012 Austin represented the Portugal national rugby league team at the Cabramatta International Nines.
