Boardman High School is a public high school in Boardman, Ohio. It is the only high school in the Boardman Local School District. The first high school, located on Market Street, is now Boardman Center Middle School. In 1969, the new high school was built on Glenwood Ave. In 2000, a new performing arts center was added-on by donation, including a substantial sum by former student and football star, Bernie Kosar.[citation needed] Boardman High School is currently under the direction of Principal Cinthia Fernback, the only female principal in the school's history.

Student activities

The Boardman Spartan Marching Band

Over the years, Boardman High School's marching band has become not only a symbol for the school, but a symbol within the state. It is a nationally recognized band, frequently taking trips to events such as the Rose Bowl, professional football games, and the Indy 500. Every year the band is invited on several highly recognized trips, usually accepting 1–2 invites. In November 2009, during a trip to New York City for the Veteran's Day Parade, the jazz ensemble performed at Trump Tower. The small ensemble received such favorable reviews that they were invited back. Band director Thomas Ruggieri also makes the band stand out by selecting popular music; in the 2010 football season, the band played hits such as Bad Romance, Tik Tok, My First Kiss, and California Gurls. During the winter, the band splits into three separate bands: wind ensemble (the highest performance level), symphonic band, concert band and freshman band (consisting of a majority of all incoming freshman, with the exception of those in jazz or orchestra). The Boardman High School Wind Ensemble has also become a highly acclaimed group, frequently invited to play for the Ohio Board of Education.

Music

In 2006, the music department was selected a "Grammy Signature School" and received a $1,000 award. The music department was one of 16 schools selected for this honor.[3] The department consists of award-winning choral, band, and orchestra departments. The choral department is currently under the direction of Linda Smrek. The band is under the direction of Thomas Ruggieri. The orchestra is under the direction of Michele Prokop.

Sports

Boardman has many sports teams that students can participate in. Being that Boardman is a member of the All-American Conference[1] the competition level is very high.
