Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH) is Boston University's graduate School of Public Health. It is located in the heart of Boston University's Medical Campus in the South End neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. The current dean is Sandro Galea. Former dean Robert Meenan stepped down at the end of 2014. BUSPH has more than 6,500 alumni, 150 full-time faculty, 200 part-time faculty, and students from more than 43 countries.[1][2] It is fully accredited by the Association of Schools of Public Health[3] and is ranked 10th in Public Health Grad Schools by the U.S. News & World Report and has a total research portfolio worth more than $180 million.[4][5]

History

The school was established in 1976 as a program in BU's School of Medicine and became an official school of the University in 1979 with five programs.[6] It was the brainchild of Dr. Douglas K. Decker. He designed the admission criteria (successful healthcare managers and practitioners), the curriculum (practical, rather than theoretical), teaching approach (pairing academicians and accomplished practitioners in the field), and the type (classes taught at night to make it possible for working managers, nurses, and doctors to attend.)[citation needed] The first dean was Dr. Norman A. Scotch, who guided the school through the accreditation process.[citation needed]
