Broadwing Corporation

Broadwing Corporation, LLC was a data, voice, and media solutions company based in Austin, Texas.

Broadwing Communications was founded in 1962 as Tower Communications Systems, Inc, originally a microwave communication provider. That company became IXC Communications in 1994. When Cincinnati Bell acquired IXC Communications in 1999, the merged company was renamed Broadwing. In 2003, Cincinnati Bell reclaimed its former name, selling its competitive carrier operations—Broadwing—to equipment manufacturer Corvis. (Corvis Corporation had been incorporated on June 2, 1997.) In 2004, Corvis acquired Focal Communications, folded Focal into Broadwing Communications’ operations, and used that opportunity to change the name of Broadwing Communications’ parent company from Corvis Corporation to Broadwing Corporation. Broadwing Communications provided communications solutions and services (including Voice over IP) to more than 130,000 enterprises and eight of the Fortune 100 enterprises.

Broadwing's competitor Level 3 Communications announced on October 17, 2006, that it was intending to buy Broadwing for $1.4 Billion. [1] On January 3, 2007 it announced that it had completed this acquisition [2].
