The mixture of water and sugar should be boiled and cooled first, before pouring it over the salted mangoes. Some add chili to the cooled sugar water mixture, but others prefer burong mangga without "sili" (Filipino) or chili.

Original "basic" burong mangga is made using a brine solution, (2/3 cup rock salt dissolved in a gallon of water) and pouring it over halved very young "chupadera" or sip-sipin mangoes in a jar.
