Sir Bysshe Shelley, 1st Baronet
Sir Bysshe Shelley, 1st Baronet of Castle Goring (21 June 1731 – 6 January 1815) was the grandfather of Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.
Life
Shelley was born in Newark, New Jersey (present day USA) on 21 June 1731.[1][2] He became rich and influential due to a combination of marriages to women from other influential families and his own family's wealth.[3] In the 1790s, following the death of his second wife, he built a magnificent country house, Castle Goring, which he intended to be the family seat. He was created 1st Baronet Shelley, of Castle Goring, Sussex. He died in 1815 at the age of 83.[4]
Personal life
Sir Bysshe was married twice; firstly, to Mary Catherine Michell on 30 June 1752, and secondly to Elizabeth Jane Perry (a descendant of King Henry VII) in 1769.
