CUNY TV /ˈkjuːni/ is a non-commercial Educational-access television cable station in New York City, part of The City University of New York's university system. It provides tele-course programming varying from mathematics, physics and biology to history, art and social studies. It also provides cultural programming with shows in German, Spanish and French. The station re-broadcasts Amy Goodman's Democracy Now! twice a day, as well as daily world news in English from Deutsche Welle. It was established in 1985.

It also shows many old films and foreign films, especially from Poland in Prof. Jerry Carlson's and City College film studies program's weekly City Cinematheque. Public affairs shows include the Baruch College's forums. Michael Stoler's The Stoler Report airs a panel discussion on the state of the Tri-State real estate market. Stoler also does the one on one interview show Building NY.

In 2010, the station transitioned to HDTV. Although, it is airing on cable in SD, digital channel DTV 25.3 transmits in HD 720p.

In 2012 television and radio studios at CUNY TV have been renamed as The Himan Brown TV & Radio Studios, after Himan Brown, an American radio producer and director. Since 1999, the station has won numerous television industry awards, including 9 New York Emmy Awards, a number of Telly Awards and Communicator Awards for its variety of series and program specials.

Original programming

The station produces and co-produces a number of original series at its studios in New York. After original airing on cable the shows are archived and uploaded to station's YouTube channel.[1] Some series currently in production are:[2]

  • 219West, CUNY Graduate School of Journalism's monthly news magazine that covers the NYC area;
  • African-American Legends profiles prominent African-Americans, hosted by Roscoe C. Brown, Jr;
  • Arts in the City, a monthly look at the lively arts scene in the New York metropolitan area, hosted by Magalie Laguerre-Wilkinson
  • Asian American Life, a monthly series about the fastest growing immigrant group in the country, living in the tri-state area, hosted by Ernabel Demillo
  • Bob Herbert's Op-Ed.TV, hosted by journalist and columnist Bob Herbert;
  • Building NY and The Stoler Report series about real estate and business leaders of the Metropolitan region;
  • Canapé, series devoted to French cultural events in NYC and the United States;
  • City Cinematheque, world film series, hosted by Professor Jerry Carlson, includes lively discussion with scholars, film professionals and critics;
  • CityWide, monthly talk show covers business and public affairs in New York City;
  • CUNY Forum, hour-long monthly forum to discuss in New York City government and politics;
  • Eldridge & Co., hosted by former NYC Council Member Ronnie Eldridge;
  • Independent Sources, weekly series about New York's ethnic and immigrant communities;
  • Italics: The Italian American Magazine, hosted by Anthony Julian Tamburri;
  • Nueva York, multiple NY Emmy-winning series[3][4] explores Latino culture in New York's metropolitan area;
  • One to One, public affairs interviews by journalist Sheryl McCarthy;
  • POTUS 2016 with Brian Lehrer, a weekly show hosted by the WNYC radio host Brian Lehrer;
  • The Open Mind, weekly conversation hosted by Richard D. Heffner since 1956
  • Science & U!, explores the world of science, for audiences of all ages;
  • Science Goes to the Movies, series that looks at the science in contemporary motion pictures;
  • Study With The Best, magazine-style show profiling success stories from The City University of New York;
  • TimesTalks, a talk show co-produced with The New York Times utilizing CUNY TV's own 5-camera production truck;
  • Tony Guida's NY, talk show hosted by New York journalist Tony Guida ;
  • Nationally syndicated Theater Talk and The American Theatre Wing's Working in the Theatre are shows about the theater industry;
