Purpose

In some countries the campus card works as an official identification document. In other countries the campus card turn valid only in conjunction with an official photo ID such as a passport or a driver's license. On the campus card data which is needed to identify the student is stored. The data stored here are usually the full name of the student, date of birth, place of birth, the validity period of the registration, and the key data for the study. These usually include the student number, the field of study and the current semester. The type of storage is dependent on the used technology such as contactless smartcards (proximity card) or a smartcard with a magnetic stripe or a Personal identification number.

Campus Card functions

In addition to the stored data for identification of the student universities can also add some applications to the campus card. Some examples for campus card applications are listed here:[1][2]

  • physical Access (Lecture Halls, IT-rooms, Dorms, Lockers, Sport facilities, Libraries, Cafeterias...)
  • logical Access (Computers, Intranet, Curriculum, Exams...)
  • cashless payment functions for cafeteria, vending machines or shops at the campus

  • library card
  • use of copy machines
  • time and attendance control
  • registration for exams
  • transport ticket for public transport
