Candidate recruitment
Candidate recruitment, in politics, involves finding and convincing suitable people to run for political office. Legislative leaders use candidate recruitment to build or maintain a majority.[1] After 1976, the Republican Party began targeting U.S. House and Senate seats most favorable to Republican takeovers and recruiting candidates to run for those seats.[2]
Ability to recruit high-quality challengers often depends on the incumbent's being perceived as weak.[3] Organizations such as Emily's List are active in recruiting female candidates.[4]
United States
In the United States, Democrats (including organizations such as Run for Something) began placing a heavy emphasis on legislative candidate recruitment, especially of female and young candidates, following the election of Donald Trump to the presidency,[5] in hopes that there would be an anti-Trump wave election.[6] Therefore, it appeared likely that the federal United States elections, 2018 would have crowded Democratic primaries.[7]
