Canvas is a United States-based technology company which provides mobile apps for data collection and sharing. They create apps to gather information, and the apps can be for a wide range of functions.[1] All submissions are stored online. Canvas allows users to customize their apps and can include GPS location capture, photos, signature capture, and reference data. Data can be exported in a comma-separated values spreadsheet or a pdf.[2]

Canvas relies on a subscription model for access to the app builder and to upload new data via the mobile app, with a free one month trial period available. The company's main offices are in Reston, Virginia, with a regional office in Sydney, Australia.

Business structure

Founded in 2008 by Marc Austin, Chris Morrisette, James Quigley and Matt Warner as a company specializing in Software as a Service (SaaS), Canvas is headquartered in Reston, Virginia. A regional office covering Asia Pacific in Sydney, Australia was opened in 2013.[3] Canvas is run as a flat organization free of hierarchical structure, where performance is judged based on metrics.[4]

Canvas practices a form of corporate philanthropy via an internal initiative called the Ante Up program. Rather than volunteer or donate money, Canvas donates their product and employee time to nonprofit organizations.[5][6]

Products and services

Canvas services provide mobile and tablet interfaces for filling out forms or collecting other date, which is then stored online, through a cloud model. Features available include photos, GPS, digitizing signatures, and similar. Apps can be customized, with pre-made templates for specific industries available (such as construction or pet sitting). Canvas has apps in 4 languages: English, French, Spanish, and Dutch.

The Canvas smart client is available for Microsoft Windows, Android, iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch), Windows Mobile, Windows Phone, and BlackBerry. Computers are used for accessing submissions and customizations. Filling out the apps occurs primarily on mobile devices such as phones and tablets. There are some minor differences between operating systems.

"MyCanvas" is a service which allows more open access to data created by paid accounts, allowing, for example, a customer to review records they have submitted to a Canvas user.[7][8]
