Usually One Day Internationals must be played by the top team representing one cricketing nation, and until recently the International Cricket Council has enforced this rigorously. However, the ICC made an exception for the game played by an ICC World XI against an ACC Asian XI, which was the centrepiece of the World Cricket Tsunami Appeal to raise funds for World Vision following the Indian Ocean tsunami of 26 December 2004.

In 2005, it made its second exception to the rule. The first Afro-Asian Cup was competed between the ACC Asian XI and an ACA African XI. The games in the Afro-Asian Cup, which is due to run for at least three years, were awarded official ODI status by the ICC. Three games were played in the 2005 competition, which was drawn one-one, with one no result. The series was played again in June 2007.

There are 24 players who have played for the ACA African XI. All have played for their own national sides as well.
