The social science of anthropology has a rich tradition in India. Usually believed to have a formal beginning in 1784 with the establishment of Asiatic Society of Bengal, anthropology has come a long way in the last two centuries. Earliest anthropological writings about India are by the British administrators, missionaries, and travelers; as well as British who were trained as anthropologists, Indian anthropologists came to the fore in the 20th century. They have contributed to tribal studies, rural studies, anthropology of complex society and anthropological thought. Foremost among Indian anthropologists have been Sarat Chandra Roy, Panchanan Mitra, L P Vidyarthi, M N Srinivas and Kumar Suresh Singh. Today, the Anthropological Survey of India and the Indian Anthropological Society are important organisations that organize research in this field.
