The larger mine vessels of the U.S. Army were designated "Mine Planter" with minelayer being a naval term. The ships, assisted by others termed "Junior Mine Planter," Junction Box Boat and mine yawl, placed mines in groups at specified locations for detonation by shore control through electrical cables. After 1918 all these vessels were part of the militarized U.S. Army Mine Planter Service and officers were Army Warrant Officers. From 1904 to that time mine vessels, including the Mine Planters, had been civilian crewed.
