The English and Foreign Languages University (or EFLU), formerly the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL),[1] is a central university in India. The main campus is located in Hyderabad, but it also operates campuses at Lucknow, Shillong, and Malapuram.
Established by the Union Government of India in 1958 as the Central Institute of English, it was expanded in 1972 to include the teaching of foreign languages. Subsequently, the name was also changed to Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages before it was given central university status in 2006, and was then renamed the English and Foreign Languages University.
EFLU is dedicated to the study of English and foreign languages, along with their literatures, organisation of research, training of teachers, production of teaching materials, and extension services, to help improve language teaching standards in India. The School of Interdisciplinary Studies has research-oriented departments focused on such things as translation studies, cultural studies, comparative literature, exclusion and inclusion policy, and the philosophy of arts and aesthetics. It is the only university in India dedicated exclusively to the teaching/learning of foreign languages.
EFLU offers academic programmes in English, Arabic, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, Persian, Turkish, Italian, Chinese, Korean, and Hindi.
EFLU was among the first institutes in the country to start a cultural studies course, creating an M.A. in that subject.

Campuses
EFLU functions from four campuses.
Hyderabad
The Hyderabad campus is the headquarters and oldest campus of EFLU.
The institute is situated on a 15 hectare site near Osmania University in Hyderabad. The academic programmes of the institute have been organised into 12 schools:

The campus offers courses leading to a B.A., M.A., Be.d in English, and an M.Phil. and Ph.D. in disciplines including Linguistics, ELT, Literature, Cultural Studies, Communication studies, European Studies and Language Studies.
Malappuram
EFLU's Malappuram campus was established in 2013. It offers a diploma course in teaching English.
The government of Kerala has granted 75 acres of land at Panakkad, Malappuram for the campus. Dr. PP Mohammed has been appointed as an officer on special duty.
EFLU Lucknow campus
EFLU Campus at Lucknow was started in 1979 to provide training to university/college teachers of English from Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab Chandigarh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Ever since its inception, the campus has conducted refresher courses for university and college teachers, proficiency courses for learners and contact programmes for the participants of Postgraduate Certificate in the Teaching of English. In 1989 the centre introduced the Postgraduate Diploma in the Teaching of English. The faculty members have also been involved in extension services.
The Lucknow campus runs these programme:
- Two-year M.A. (English),
- B.A. English (Hons.),
- B.A and M.A English integrated course. The number of seats available for the B.A. Course at the Luckow campus is 30. The syllabus for the course focuses on English and Modern World Literatures, Critical Theories, Translation Studies, English Language Teaching (ELT), and Linguistics,
- M. Phil and Ph.D. course in Linguistics and Phonetics,
- Part-time courses in French, German, Spanish and Russian
EFLU Shillong campus
The North East campus of EFLU, Shillong was established in 1973 to cater to the needs of North-East India. The Centre has initiated teaching and training programmes, workshops, seminars, discussion groups and extension lectures intended to strengthen the teaching of English and foreign languages in the North-Eastern region. The centre has trained more than 3000 people in English language teaching and in foreign languages.
It offers courses in English, Russian, French, Spanish and German, Postgraduate Diploma in the Teaching of English (PDTE), M. A in Mass Communication and Journalism and M.A. in English, M.Phil and Ph.D in English.

Establishment of new campuses
According to The English and Foreign Languages Universities Act, 2006, the university may establish campuses at other places. The university has four campuses functioning at Hyderabad, Malappuram, Lucknow and Shillong. Since the university has an all-India mandate, the university aims to become India’s first truly multi-campus university. The idea behind opening new campuses is to reach out to the people who live outside the metropolitan cities, and do not have access to higher education. Hitherto a majority of Indians have been deprived of English and foreign languages and have therefore been unable to match those educated in urban public/convent schools. By setting up new campuses within their reach, the university will help them to overcome that handicap.
Ramesh Mohan Library
The Ramesh Mohan Library was established in 1958 to provide bibliographical, documentation and information support to the teaching and research programmes of the University. The Library moved into its new building in July 1988. The main objective of the Library is to provide information of books, journals, theses and other related documents relevant to the academic and research needs of the University. These materials are organised according to system of Dewey Decimal Classification on the shelves, and provides access to these materials through Online public access catalog (OPAC).
The Library has about 1,60,914 books and other reading materials, about 202 academic and research iournals and 1,485 M.Phil. / Ph.D. theses submitted by the Research Scholars. There is a small collection of books in Indian languages and Audio-visual materials.
Official Journal
The EFLU publishes Contextures: A Journal of Literature and Culture bi-annually.[2] It aims to contribute to and debates of literary and cultural practices from the heterogeneous planetary together by several departments of literature.
