The Cerro Matoso mine is a large mine in the north-west of Colombia in the Córdoba department. Cerro Matoso represents one of the largest nickel reserve in Colombia having estimated reserves of 108 million tonnes of ore grading 0.57% nickel.[1] The 108 million tonnes of ore contains 615,000 tonnes of nickel metal.[1]
On August 19, 2014, the mine's owner BHP Billiton announced it was splitting the company in two. A newly formed entity called South32 was to house BHP Billiton's non-core businesses including the Cerro Matoso mine. To be capitalized at $15 billion, South32 was to be listed on the Australian Securities Exchange, with a secondary listing in Johannesburg.[2]
