Chauncey Wendell Bailey, Jr. (October 20, 1949 – August 2, 2007) was an American journalist, noted for his work primarily on issues of the African American community. He served as editor-in-chief of The Oakland Post in Oakland, California from June 2007 until his death. His 37-year career in journalism included lengthy periods as a reporter at The Detroit News and The Oakland Tribune. He was shot dead on a Downtown Oakland street on August 2, 2007.[1] His death outraged fellow journalists, who joined together to create the Chauncey Bailey Project dedicated to continuing his work and uncovering the facts of his murder. In June 2011 Yusuf Bey IV, a local bakery owner, and his associate Antoine Mackey were convicted of ordering Bailey's murder. A third man, bakery handyman Devaughndre Brousard, had earlier confessed to being the triggerman. Bailey had been doing investigative reporting about Bey and his business; Bailey was the first American journalist killed for domestic reporting since 1976.[2]

Biography

Early years

Chauncey was born in Oakland, California into a Catholic family who were members of St. Benedict's Catholic Church on 82nd Avenue. He lived in East Oakland neighborhoods for many years and attended Hayward High School in the nearby city of Hayward.[3] Bailey earned an associate degree from Oakland's old Merritt Community College in 1968, and a Bachelors in Journalism from San Jose State University in 1972.

Career

Bailey first wrote for The Oakland Post in 1970, and made his foray into television news that year as an on-air reporter with station KNTV in San Jose, California, where he continued through 1971. During the next three years he worked at the San Francisco Sun Reporter.[4]

In the mid-1970s, Bailey moved to Hartford, Connecticut to work on the Hartford Courant for three years. After working for a year on the rewrite desk at United Press International in Chicago, he returned to Oakland in 1978 and wrote for the California Voice through late 1980.[4][5] Bailey again moved to Chicago, where he worked as a publicist for the nonprofit Comprand Inc., and then relocated to Washington, D.C. in 1981 to work for a year as press secretary for the freshman U.S. Representative Gus Savage, D-Ill.[4] From 1982 Bailey spent the next decade as a reporter and columnist for the Detroit News, where he covered city government and worked on special projects.[4] In 1992 he returned to Oakland as public affairs director and newscaster on Bay Area radio with station KDIA, which was co-owned by then mayor of Oakland, Elihu Harris and then California Assembly Speaker Willie Brown. During this era Bailey was seen throughout the 1990s as an interviewer and commentator on Soul Beat Television on the Oakland cable station KSBT, where he worked along with former Oakland actress Luenell.[4] Bailey worked at the Oakland Tribune from 1993 until 2005.[4] In the mid-1990s Bailey split from his wife.[5]

In 2003 Bailey quit his program on Soul Beat after he failed in his attempt to buy the station. His program was canceled in 2004.[5] In 2005 he began writing freelance travel stories for The Oakland Post. He became editor in June 2007, and then editor-in-chief of all five Post weeklies.[3] The Post is the largest African-American weekly newspaper in northern California, published in Oakland, California by the Post News Group, and serving mainly Oakland, Berkeley, Richmond and San Francisco.[6] In late 2004 Bailey became one of the producers, co-founders and hosts for OUR-TV (Opportunities in Urban Renaissance Television) on Comcast Channel 78.[5] Bailey had been known for his aggressive questioning of city officials.[1] Oakland Police spokesman Ronald Holmgren said: "I know him as being a somewhat outspoken type individual, assertive in his journalistic approach when trying to get at matters at hand."[7]

Your Black Muslim Bakery

Bailey was shot and killed while working on a story about the 2004 take over of Your Black Muslim Bakery, involving its pending bankruptcy.[8][9] After the shooting, the Post publisher Paul Cobb revealed on television that, prior to Bailey's killing, Cobb had withheld from publication a story that Bailey had written earlier, saying only that it was about "things like" what happened to Bailey. He later stated that the police had asked him not to reveal anything about the matter. On August 6, 2007 a former employee of the bakery, Ali Saleem Bey, who is not a relative of the bakery's owner, but who adopted the Bey name, revealed that he was Bailey's source for the withheld story, which the Post had decided was not ready for publication.

On several occasions Bailey had asked Bey to give him the story of 2004 take over of Your Black Muslim Bakery. Bailey had done an initial investigation of the murder of Waajid Bey and the discovery of his body wrapped in plastic buried in a shallow grave 6 months after his disappearance. On August 17, 2004 the Oakland Tribune published an article written and investigated by Chauncey Bailey about the discovery of Waajid Bey's body. In it OPD lead Homicide investigator Bruce Brock is quoted as saying "police are investigating this case as a definite homicide" and police "are not sure of a motive". This establishes that Bailey had prior intimate knowledge of OPD's investigation relationship to the murder of Waajid Bey before he received and wrote his July 17, 2007 story about the "Bakery" from source Ali Saleem Bey.[10]

[Declassified 2011] OPD Ersie Joyner testified (OPD Skelly against Longmire) in 2009 that an OPD lead Joint Terrorism Task Force [OPD, FBI, ATF, ALCO DA, and U.S. Attorney Dougles Sprague] along with "15 law enforcement agencies from around the Bay Area" were meeting at least once a week, 10 weeks prior to the murder of Chauncey Bailey and 5 to 10 weeks after the murder. Supervisor Joyner testified that the JTTF was completely aware of OPD's of Longmire's illicit "aiding" relationship with Yusuf Bey 4th, and specifically made a point of saying for the record that assistant chief Howard Jordan and Alameda County D.A. Tom Rodgers were giving direct orders to OPD Derwin Longmire while he was friends with Yusuf Bey 4th. That means that OPD and the JTTF knew the following before the murder of Chauncey Bailey:

On July 8, 2007 Odell Robeson was murdered by an illegal AK-47 under the control of Yusuf Bey 4th and being non interdicted "gun walked' by OPD chain of command and the JTTF.

On July 12, 2007 Michael Wills was murdered by an illegal AK-47 under the control of Yusuf Bey 4th and being non interdicted "gun walked' by OPD chain of command and the JTTF. [After the murder of Bailey, OPD Jordan informed the media, that after OPD established the murder of Wills was connected to Yusuf Bey 4th, OPD obtained the arrest warrant that was originally to be served the day before but was changed and lied about to the media by chief Tucker about OPD changing the service date to the day after Bailey's murder.]

On July 13, 2007 source Ali Saleem Bey filed a Citizens Police Review Board (CPRB) complaint against Bruce Brock, Todd Crutchfield and OPD CID chain of command including Tucker and Jordan, complaining about purposeful failure to investigate the 2004 murder of Waajid Bey, the 2005 attempted murder of John Muhammad Bey, and the fraudulent federal Bankruptcy of murder victim CEO Waajid Bey, filed by Yusuf Bey 4 October 24, 2006 and known by OPD chain of command to be fraud based upon a murder OPD is supposed to be investigating.

On July 16, 2007 Yusuf Bey 4th benefiting from OPD and (JTTF) aid, was given a deferred sentence by Solano County and allowed to walk out of court free, even though as he stood in court before the judge and the Solano County D.A. it was known that Yusuf Bey 4th was directly connected to, the 2005 attempted murder of John Bey, the 2005 robbery and vandalism of two liquor stores, the 2006 San Francisco attempted murder, the 2007 kidnap and torture of two women, the 7/8 and 7/12 murders of civilians Robeson and Wills less than a week prior. OPD and the JTTF released Yusuf Bey 4th even though he had active arrest warrants including San Francisco on a $360,000 bench warrant and was on multiple concurrent bails associated with violence and weapons.

With depraved indifference OPD and JTTF knew Yusuf Bey 4th had access to and control over both the gun walked AK-47 murder weapon and the gun walked shot gun stolen in the November 2005 liquor store robbery when they effected his release from Solano County. Note: 2011-Alameda County D.A. Melissa Krum[Dooher], Bailey murder trial prosecutor, obtained a conviction of Yusuf Bey 4th for ordering 19 year old Devaughndre Broussard [who was only associated with the 36 year old Your Black Muslim Bakery for only 3 months] to use the [OPD JTTF gun walked] shot gun to murder Bailey on August 2, 2007. When Ali Saleem Bey found out that the evening of the 18th of July that Yusuf Bey 4th had "magically" walked out of Solano County Jail, he knew that Yusuf Bey 4th was being aided by federal and local law enforcement actively as well as passively [IAD07-0538 failure to investigate Yusuf Bey 4th] but had no idea that this organized OPD JTTF group was meeting once a week about Yusuf Bey 4th for 8 weeks before Solano County. .

Chauncey Bailey's story about Your Black Muslim Bakery

On July 17, 2007 source Ali Saleem Bey ran into Bailey on 14th downtown Oakland and Bailey again asked for a follow up to his August 17, 2004 Tribune article about the murder of 51 year old CEO Waajid Bey and the take over of Your Black Muslim Bakery and the clear division after his murder. Source Ali Saleem Bey agreed based upon 24 hours earlier Yusuf Bey 4th had "magically" walked out of Solano County and was free to continue the fraudulent bankruptcy theft of Your Black Muslim Bakery corporation. Both men walked to Bailey's office a block or so away and source Saleem Bey gave Bailey a complete update of everything he and John Bey had discovered in the family investigation since that point, they spoke for over 2 1/2 hours and went over a power point summary Saleem Bey had provided to ACLU, Amnesty international, Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums' office, County Supervisor Keith Carson's office, State Assembly man Sandre Swanson's office, the I.R.S., the Bankruptcy Court. and Congresswoman Barbara Lee's office over the last month in an effort to stop the fraudulent bankruptcy of murder victim Waajid Bey's Your Black Muslim Bakery corporation. [2011 the same power point was used by ALCO DA Krum{Dooher] as evidence in the Bailey murder trial to convict Yusuf Bey 4th.] Saleem Bey's goal was to alert the public that the person inside your Black Muslim Bakery were not the same people that left when Waajid Bey was murdered. Chauncey Bailey was not investigating Your Black Muslim Bakery finances as the story, Bailey wrote the story provided by source Saleem Bey to expose the take over of the Bakery by a majority of outside youngsters persons, the Yusuf Bey 4th fraudulent bankruptcy, and his "teflon" "hands off" crime connection to OPD chain of command.

Source Ali Saleem Bey gave Bailey the story of OPD Internal Affairs complaint IAD07-0538 filed only 4 days prior, about OPD chain of command [Tucker, Jordan] connection to Yusuf Bey 4th's multi year crime spree. The fact that Yusuf Bey 4th was the OPD known lead suspect in the 2005 John Bey attempted murder and how OPD, IRS,DA, ATF and FBI actions in releasing a known danger to the community, enabled Yusuf Bey 4th to continue his known Fraudulent Bankruptcy of murder victim of Your Black Muslim Bakery legal CEO Waajid Bey. Bailey told source Ali Saleem Bey that he was also investigating OPD, but didn't tell Ali Saleem Bey what that story was. Bailey then said "its too much for one article, we are going to make this a series". Bailey agreed with source Saleem Bey that the first story would be how the Bakery ended up in Bankruptcy through a corporate "coup", how 99% of the Bey family and persons associated with Waajid Bey had left 3 years earlier, how teenagers and young twenties (youngsters) that were "representing" Black Muslims for less than a year in Your Black Muslim Bakery [a 36-year Oakland Black institution], and how OPD [IAD07-0538] is failing to stop Yusuf Bey 4th's fraudulent Bankruptcy of Your Black Muslim Bakery corporation.

Source Ali Saleem Bey's story of how Your Black Muslim Bakery the corporation had been illegally seized from its rightful owners and building stolen in a corporate coup through fraud and forgery during the 6 months time period that murdered legal CEO Waajid Bey whereabouts were unknown to the family. Three months after the disappearance of CEO Waajid Bey and 3 months before his body was found, 99% of Bey family and non family members (some employed since its founding over 30 years prior) quit Your Black Muslim Bakery and separated from the persons that took control after the murder of CEO Waajid Bey. Bailey wrote that 99% of the persons occupying the Your Black Muslim Bakery between June 2004 and July 2007 were non Bey family members, and the vast majority were Black teenagers and early 20 's who were fresh out of jail, Ali Saleem Bey told Bailey that OPD had informant and provocateurs inside the "Bakery" and how chain of command was allowing these youngsters "run wild" as long as they were attacking the real leadership of the "Bakery" namely Waajid, John, and Saleem Bey. Source Saleem Bey revealed that beginning with Antar Bey's murder in 2005 OPD knew for sure that 19 year old, part-time sandwich maker while legal CEO Waajid Bey was alive, who never had a leadership position in the Bey family prior to becoming a teenage CEO of a murder victim's corporation that's twice as old as he was absolutely not the CEO of Your Black Muslim Bakery. Ali Saleem Bey revealed that in June 2005, John Bey, the former head of the Bey security service, left town with his family for safety and to recuperate after an attempt on his life in a shooting outside his home. John had tried to expose the fraud behind the coup and the transfer of corporate property out of Your Black Muslim Bakery in a family civil lawsuit filed by Taylor and Goins in 2004 while legal CEO Waajid Bey was still missing. In 2005, Antar Bey signed for a $650,000 mortgaged on murder victim Waajid Bey's Your Black Muslim Bakery corporate headquarters, Antar Bey and did not use any of it to pay corporate taxes. After Antar's October 2005 murder and "Alexander Haig" take over by teenage Yusuf Bey 4th [who had zero corporate business experience] the corporate headquarters ended up in default and exactly one year later Yusuf Bey 4th filed a fraudulent federal bankruptcy by signing as CEO of murder victim CEO Waajid Bey's corporation and owing the I.R.S. $150,000.[10] The Chauncey Bailey project covered all the above detail as " An attorney for the Post also confirmed that Bailey had been working on the story about the "financial status of the organization" and including the possibly criminal "activities of a number of people who were working in the organization".[10]

Bankruptcy

After one year as "mentor" of Yusuf Bey 4th Longmire [being ordered by] OPD and JTTF including bankruptcy fraud expert U.S. attorney Douglas Sprague watched on October 24, 2006, as Your Black Muslim Bakery, Inc. filed for a fraudulent Chapter 11 bankruptcy, listing its CEO as Yusuf Ali Bey, otherwise known as Yusuf Bey IV. With $900,000 in debts, owed mostly to the mortgage holder Davis Mortgage who issued a loan to a corporation whose CEO was murdered and body found wrapped in plastic and buried in a shallow grave only months before accepting all documents from the lead suspects in the murder before closing the loan, A year later the 36 year headquarter building of Your Black Muslim Bakery was about to be foreclosed upon. The remaining debt, $200,000, was owed to the Internal Revenue Service. The financial information provided Bailey about Your Black Muslim Bakery by source Saleem Bey was from the public information provided by Yusuf Bey 4th in the fraudulent bankruptcy and specifically the fraudulent $650,000 loan and the I.R.S. debt Waajid Bey as tax expert was successfully fighting at the time of his murder. Source Saleem Bey showed Bailey the fraudulent documents produced by Antar Bey through discovery in the 2005 publicly filed and OPD known civil suit and how id Antar was proved fraudulent in 2005, that makes Yusuf Bey 4th a fraud by default and thus the bankruptcy was proven a fraud conclusively to Bailey on July 17, 2007. Bailey reasoned he didn't need to get Yusuf Bey 4th's "side" of the story as POST owner Paul Cobb illogically demanded of Bailey to publish his story based upon the fact that he had solid proof and a solid source in Saleem Bey and the person he was exposing was associated with murder and attempted murder.

The day after Bailey's death, OPD and JTTF including bankruptcy fraud expert U.S. attorney Douglas Sprague watched on August 3, 2007 as U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Edward Jellen ordered the fraudulent case to be converted to Chapter 7 liquidation effective August 9, 2007.[11] The judge ordered liquidation in spite of the fact that source Saleem Bey addressed the court in June 2007 with Yusuf Bey 4th present and noticed the court of fraud. In spite of the fact that Yusuf Bey 4th had been arrested and charged with fraud. The judge ordered this in spite of the fact that Yusuf Bey 4th was connected through his brother Antar to the murder of the last provable legal CEO Waajid Bey. One month later ignoring a mountain of evidence including the fact that Chauncey Bailey was murdered to cover up his story about the fraudulent bankruptcy's connection to the murder of CEO Waajid Bey, the attempted murder of CEO John Bey and the plotted murder of source CEO Saleem Bey, trustee of the fraudulent bankruptcy Tevis Thompson liquidated unsolved murder victim Waajid Bey's corporate headquarters at auction.

Final days

By 2007 Bailey was living in an apartment near the south end of Lake Merritt, not far from downtown Oakland.[3] He was known to walk to work as a daily routine, and to stop for breakfast at a McDonald's restaurant at 14th Street and Jackson Street, about a half-block from where he was killed in the 200 block of 14th Street, becoming Oakland's 72nd homicide of 2007.[3]

On July 31, 2007 source Saleem Bey and John Muhammad Bey attended a meeting held at Congresswoman Barbara Lee's office. In attendance was Sandra Andrews, Lee's chief of staff LEslie Littleton, Yusuf Bey 4th and young men who accompanied him to the meeting. The meeting was held in a conference room with all mentioned parties sitting around a conference table. At the meeting source Saleem Bey and John Bey told Ms. Littleton of Yuusf Bey 4th's criminal activity since claiming to be the CEO of Your Black Muslim Bakery starting 2005. Saleem and John Bey slid a stack of paper evidence that they said proved Yusuf Bey 4th was a fraud. This was said right in front of Yusuf Bey 4th sitting 5 feet away. Ms. Andrews pushed the stack aside and Saleem and John Bey were told by Ms. Littleton that the congress woman would not be involved any more.

August 1, 2007 was the original date of the service of the warrant for the arrest of Yusuf Bey 4th but OPD chief Tucker and ass. chief Jordan changed the date to the day after the murder o fBailey and when later questioned Tucker lied to the media that it was just a "coincidence" that OPD was a day late in saving Bailey from being shot by an illegal weapon OPD was gun walking with Yusuf Bey 4th

On the morning of August 2, 2007, Bailey set out on his usual walk to work. Unknown to him, it is alleged that Devaughndre Broussard, a 19-year-old handyman at Your Black Muslim Bakery, who was on probation for a San Francisco robbery conviction, and only in Your Black Muslim Bakery for 3 months, had found out where Bailey lived. Broussard had worked at the bakery as a handyman and cook between August 2006 and March 2007, before leaving to find other work. He was rehired at the bakery early in July 2007.[9]

Broussard grew up in San Francisco's Western Addition district. The office of the San Francisco District Attorney revealed that in January 2006, at age 18, Broussard plead guilty to an assault charge, and served a first-time offender sentence of one year in San Francisco county jail. Upon release, Broussard was also ordered to three years of supervised probation.[12] In addition to his probation status, he was wanted on an outstanding failure-to-appear warrant for his arrest, charged with a 2006 assault with a firearm in San Francisco.[13]

OPD supervisor of Derwin Longmire, Ersie Joyner Police revealed that on the night of August 1, 2007, [the OPD admitted original date of the arrest warrant for Yusuf Bey 4th] He [Ersie Joyner] ordered OPD 24-hour surveillance of Your Black Muslim Bakery headquarters to "stand down" exactly during the window of time that Broussard first went looking for Bailey at his apartment complex as ordered by Yusuf Bey 4th [according to DA Krum-Dooher] who would not have been able to order Broussard to murder Bailey if he [Yusuf Bey 4th] was taken into custody in Solano County 2 weeks earlier, but instead Yusuf Bey 4th was released with depraved indifference to life by OPD and the JTTF knowing Yusuf Bey 4th had access to gun walked weapons [AK-47 and Shot gun] and was leader of a bunch of fresh out of San Francisco jail teenagers, who followed his orders. Broussard having discovered Bailey's home address near the south end of Lake Merritt. Early on the next morning of August 2, 2007 [Still no OPD surveillance 24 hours before a planned 200 officer raid] Broussard looked for Bailey at his office, but Bailey had not yet arrived.[9] Police revealed that Broussard also went looking for Bailey twice again at his apartment complex that morning. At 7:17 a.m. an AC Transit bus driver may have seen Broussard near Bailey's apartment, standing outside with the shotgun at First Avenue and International Boulevard. The driver called his dispatcher, who reported the incident to the Alameda County Sheriff's Office. The driver continued on his route, and deputies responded to the location, but could not locate the man in their search.[14]

Broussard then, in a white Ford Aerostar van, began driving around the route he thought Bailey would be taking to work. Broussard insisted that he acted alone, but police believe he had an accomplice in the van. At 7:25 a.m. Broussard spotted Bailey leaving the McDonald's restaurant where Bailey regularly stopped to eat breakfast. Broussard then got out of the van, parked on Alice Street. Wearing a mask and dark clothing, he approached Bailey with the shotgun. Police cannot confirm that a witness claims that he heard Bailey say "Please don't kill me." The witness claims he recognized Bailey, and that he was in trouble, but stopped in his tracks when he saw the shotgun.[14] Broussard admitted to police the next night that he then ambushed and killed Bailey.[9] Oakland Police investigators said that Broussard confessed that he killed Bailey because he was angry over the past and ongoing articles written by Bailey about the bakery and its personnel.[9]

Assassination

As he walked from home to work, Bailey was shot dead around 7:30 a.m. on 14th Street near Alice Street in Oakland's Lakeside Apartments District in what police described as an assassination.[1] Witnesses said the single gunman wearing dark clothing and a ski mask approached Bailey and fired at least three rounds from a shotgun, hitting Bailey at least once in the chest, then fled on foot to a waiting van and drove off.[1][3][7]

The gunman first fired a shotgun blast at Bailey's chest, then stood over him and fired again execution style at Bailey's face while Bailey was down, and then fired a coup de grâce to make sure he was dead. The assassin then escaped in the van.[14] Bailey was pronounced dead at the scene.[3] Police Chief Wayne Tucker described the killing as "unusual" because it occurred downtown and in broad daylight.[1] The Mossberg shotgun used in the murder was later identified as one stolen during a liquor store vandalism 2 years prior suspected to have been committed by members of Your Black Muslim Bakery.[15]

On the day of the killing Oakland Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland offered up to $25,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the killer.

Bailey was survived by his father, three of his four siblings, and his teenage son living in southern California. A funeral Mass was held at the East Oakland St. Benedict's Catholic Church on the morning of August 8, 2007, with an overflowing crowd of 700 in attendance, including a line of people outside for more than an hour into the service. Attendees included Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums, U.S. Representative Barbara Lee, actress Luenell, assistant dean of the University of California at Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism Paul Grabowicz who once worked with Bailey at the Tribune, and well-known local attorney John Burris. Bailey was buried at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in nearby Hayward.[5][16]

Aftermath

Beginning early at 5 a.m. on the following morning of August 3, 2007, more than 200 Oakland Police officers and SWAT team members armed with search warrants closed off a number of blocks of San Pablo Avenue, a major thoroughfare in North Oakland. The area of focus included homes and the business properties of Your Black Muslim Bakery, which operated two business locations on either side of the street between Stanford Avenue and 59th Street. The group is a Black Muslim splinter organization founded by Yusuf Bey, and now led by his son Yusuf Bey IV. The pre-dawn raids followed a two-month investigation into a variety of violent crimes, including kidnapping and murder. Police used stun grenades and broke down doors to gain entry. In a news conference later that day, Oakland Deputy Police Chief Howard Jordan said that several weapons and other evidence of value linked the killing of Chauncey Bailey to members of the group.[8] Police also recovered spent ammunition from the rooftops, and detained 19 people for questioning.[9]

In addition to the bakeries, the police also raided nearby homes. In the 1000 block of 59th Street, police recovered, from a closet,[10] the shotgun used in the killing of Bailey at the home where Broussard was also detained. The rear yard of the home connected directly to the bakery property.[13] Police also raided a home in the 900 block of Aileen Street a few blocks east of the bakery.[9] Of the 19 detainees on that morning, five were arrested along with Broussard, and Yusuf Bey IV, on probable cause arrest warrants, along with other outstanding arrest warrants, stemming from the prior investigations.[9]

Broussard was booked on suspicion of murder on August 4, 2007, for the killing of Bailey, having told police detectives that he considered himself "a good soldier". Though other charges were made against those arrested, none of them were charged with Bailey's murder.[13] On August 7, 2007 Broussard was arraigned in Alameda County Superior Court, on charges of murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.[12]

He initially confessed to killing Bailey, then recanted his confession. In a 2008 60 Minutes interview, Broussard claimed he was coerced by Yusuf Bey IV to plead guilty for the benefit of the bakery and others arrested.[17] In an interview for CBS News, Broussard said that the Oakland Police put him and Bey IV together in a room, and that Bey IV convinced him to plead guilty for the purpose of releasing other murder suspects.[18] He later pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges in exchange for a 25-year sentence and full testimony at the trial of Bey IV and others.[19]

Broussard testified for the prosecution at the trial of Bey IV and Antoine Mackey in 2011. He stated in court he was ordered by Bey to find, track and kill Bailey before the journalist could print his latest article on the bakery.[19] Bey IV and Mackey were both convicted of multiple counts of murder[20] and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.[21] In 2013 Bey's attorney, Lorna Brown, was convicted of smuggling documents out of jail for him. One of the documents turned out to be a hit list ordering an associate to kill a witness; the list and the associate were intercepted by police before he could carry out the murder.[22] In 2015, a state appeals court upheld the convictions of Yusuf Bey IV and Antoine Mackey.[23]

The Chauncey Bailey Project

To continue Bailey's work and answer questions regarding his death, more than two dozen reporters, photographers and editors from print, broadcast and electronic media, as well as journalism students, formed a group called the Chauncey Bailey Project. It was convened by New America Media, the Pacific News Service and the Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education.

In June 2008, the Chauncey Bailey Project released a secretly recorded police video that reveals how Black Muslim Bakery leader Yusuf Bey IV kept the gun used in the Chauncey Bailey killing in his closet after the attack and bragged of playing "hella dumb" when investigators asked him about the shooting.[24] Bey goes on to describe Bailey's shooting in detail, then laughingly denies he was there, and boasts that his friendship with the case's lead detective protected him from charges. Bey also claims he knew he was being recorded.

The Chauncey Bailey Project is not without its critics. Bay Area activist, investigative journalist, and radio talk show host, J.R. Valrey (who works under the pseudonym Minister of Information JR), has accused the Chauncey Bailey Project of inaccurate and "self-congratulatory" reporting.[25] Mr. Valery's criticisms largely stem from a 2008 Chauncey Bailey Project article published in the Oakland Tribune entitled "Evidence Ignored", of which Mr. Valery's connections to Chauncey Bailey and Your Black Muslim Bakery was one of the focuses.
