Cherie Buckner-Webb (born October 29, 1951)[1] is a Democratic politician from Boise, Idaho. In 2010 Buckner-Webb was elected to a single term in the Idaho House of Representatives representing the north Boise-based District 19.[2] In 2012 Buckner-Webb won the district's Idaho Senate seat, succeeding the retiring Nicole LeFavour.[3] She is Idaho's first elected African-American state legislator, and its first African-American woman legislator.
Upon taking office in the Idaho Senate Buckner-Webb was elected Democratic caucus chair.[4]
Early life and career
Buckner-Webb earned her bachelor's degree from George Fox University and her master's degree in social work from Northwest Nazarene University.
Elections
- 2012 Unopposed for the May 15, 2012, Democratic primary, Buckner-Webb won with 2,473 votes. She faced Republican challenger Paul Nelson O'Leary in the November 6, 2012, general election,[5] defeating him by a 70-30 margin.[3]
- 2010 When three-term Democratic Representative Anne Pasley-Stuart left the seat open, Buckner-Webb won the three-way 25 May 2010, Democratic primary with 2,158 votes (78.4%) against David Cadwell and J. Dallas Gudgell.[6] Buckner-Webb made state history, however, when she won the November 2, 2010, general election with 10,196 votes (68.4%) against Jim Morland,[7] becoming Idaho's first elected African American state legislator, and its first African American woman legislator.[8]
