Chris Goodnow

Professor Chris Goodnow BVSc, PhD, FAA FRS (Christopher Carl Goodnow) (born 19 September 1959 in Hong Kong) is a Professor at the Australian National University's John Curtin School of Medical Research (Director, Australian Phenomics Facility and Director, Immunogenomics Laboratory), at the ANU's campus in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory. He holds dual Australian and US citizenship. In May 2009, he was elected as a Fellow of the UK and British Commonwealth academy of science, The Royal Society.

Professor Goodnow joined the Garvan Institute of Medical Research as Deputy Director in 2015.

Work

Goodnow "has pioneered in the field of immunology by using mouse molecular genetics to reveal key mechanisms regulating the immune system, in particular the ability of the immune system to learn to differentiate between our own ‘self’ tissues and invading foreign microbes. He has also revealed the capacity of the immune system to lay down specific memory of both self and foreign, so that autoimmunity is minimised while immunity to infection becomes strong."
