Cinnaminson High School is a four-year public high school that serves students in ninth through twelfth grades from Cinnaminson Township in Burlington County, New Jersey, United States, operating as the lone secondary school of the Cinnaminson Township Public Schools. The grounds are approximately 26 acres (110,000 m2), including the land that the school is built on.

As of the 2013-14 school year, the school had an enrollment of 719 students and 67.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 10.7:1. There were 78 students (10.8% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 20 (2.8% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.[1]

Awards, recognition and rankings

The school was the 99th-ranked public high school in New Jersey out of 339 schools statewide in New Jersey Monthly magazine's September 2014 cover story on the state's "Top Public High Schools", using a new ranking methodology.[3] The school had been ranked 114th in the state of 328 schools in 2012, after being ranked 164th in 2010 out of 322 schools listed.[4] The magazine ranked the school 161st in 2008 out of 316 schools.[5] The school was ranked 137th in the magazine's September 2006 issue, which surveyed 316 schools across the state.[6] Schooldigger.com ranked the school tied for 163rd out of 381 public high schools statewide in its 2011 rankings (a decrease of 35 positions from the 2010 ranking) which were based on the combined percentage of students classified as proficient or above proficient on the mathematics (79.0%) and language arts literacy (96.0%) components of the High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA).[7] The school has been accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Secondary Schools since 1972.[8]

Athletics

The Cinnaminson High School Pirates[2] compete in the Patriot Division of the Burlington County Scholastic League (BCSL), which includes public and non-public high schools covering Burlington County, Mercer County and Ocean County in Central Jersey, operating under the supervision of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA).[9] With 525 students in grades 10-12, the school was classified by the NJSIAA for the 2014-15 school year as Central Jersey, Group II for most athletic competition purposes, which included schools with an enrollment of 506 to 749 students in that grade range.[10]

The first championship won by any of the school's athletic teams was in 1969 when the cross country team culminated a 12-1 meet record with a win at the Burlington County Scholastic League Cross Country Championship at Moorestown Memorial Field, with CHS runners placed 2nd, 3rd, 8th, 15th, and 18th to post the low score for the event. Head Coach Gene Campbell was later inducted into the CHS Athletics Hall of Fame.

The boys basketball team captured the Group III state title in 1982, defeating Linden High School in the tournament final.[11][12]

In 1991, Cinnaminson and Harrison High School were declared boys soccer co-champions after playing to a 0-0 tie in the state Group II final, the program's first state championship.[13][14] The soccer team won the 1999 South, Group II Group Semifinals, defeating Northern Burlington County Regional High School by a score of 4-2 in the tournament final.[15] In 2002, the girls soccer team won the South, Group II title over Woodstown High School, by a 2-0 score.[16] The 2004 boys soccer team won the South, Group II championship, edging Haddon Township High School in the final, 1-0.[17] In 2007, the boys soccer team won the South Jersey Group II state sectional championship with a 4-1 win over Delran High School in the tournament final.[18]

The 2003 baseball team won its first South, Group II state sectional title with a 16-12 win against Manchester Township High School in the final game.[19][20]

In football, Cinnaminson has notable alumni: Andre Collins, a linebacker for the Cincinnati Bengals, headed the first class of inductees to the Cinnaminson High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Collins, a 1986 graduate, went on to compete in football at Penn State, and before playing for the Bengals was a member of the 1991 Washington Redskins' Super Bowl team.[11] The 1992 Cinnaminson football team posted the program's first perfect season by going 11-0 and defeating Hammonton High School for the NJSIAA sectional championship.[21] The football team won the NJSIAA South Jersey Group II state sectional championship in 1991.[22] In 2004, Cinnaminson running back and team co-captain Darrell "DJ" Riley set a single-game varsity football rushing record with 360 yards in only three quarters of play. He also had six touchdowns in his record performance.[21] The coach of the school's football team is Mario Patrizi.

Cinnaminson High School competes in Varsity Tier II of the South Jersey High School Ice Hockey League.[23]

CHS Pirate Marching Band

The Cinnaminson High School Marching Band competes and performs at many events. The members of the marching band perform at football games, presenting their pep-band songs and half-time shows. In addition to a this, the band has a season of competitions within two Marching Band circuits: USSBA and Cavalcade of Bands. The band's director is Deb Knisely, who took over as head director in 2004. The band also marched in the national 4 July Parade in Washington, D.C. in 2006. in addition to the marching band the Color Guard also performs original choreography at the half time shows.

In 2008, the band, under the direction of Deb Knisley, went to Allentown, Pennsylvania for the USSBA Northern States Marching Band Championships. They placed 4th out of 14 according to yea.org and marchingbandcontest.com.
