Cosmic Girls (Hangul우주소녀; Wu Ju So Nyeo; Chinese: 宇宙少女; pinyin: Yǔzhòushɑ̀onǚ), also known as WJSN, is a South Korean-Chinese girl group formed by Starship Entertainment and Yuehua Entertainment in 2015 and debuted in 2016. The group is composed of twelve members: SeolA, Xuan Yi, Bona, Exy, Soobin, Luda, Dawon, Eunseo, Cheng Xiao, Mei Qi, Yeoreum and Dayoung. The twelve members are separated into four subgroups for each letter in "WJSN": Wonder, Joy, Sweet, and Natural. The group debuted with the release of their first mini album Would You Like? on February 25, 2016.

History

Pre-debut and formation

Cosmic Girls' first member to be revealed to the public was SeolA, who, in 2012, made a cameo in Boyfriend's "Janus" music video.

The second member who was shown to the public was Dayoung as a contestant on Survival Audition K-Pop Star 1.

The third member who was shown to the public was Exy as a contestant on the South Korean female rap competition Unpretty Rapstar 2.

The fourth member revealed to the public was Eunseo who made a cameo in Monsta X's "Rush" music video prior to debut.[1]

On December 1, 2015, Starship Entertainment started to release information about the new girl group through several social media platforms, namely Twitter and Instagram, with images of a planet, heart sign and an image of a combined orbit and heart. On December 2, Starship Entertainment continued teasing by posting another teaser photo of a silhouette gazing at an orbited heart sign. This orbited heart sign became Cosmic Girls' official logo.

On December 3, a photo of the new girl group's members' silhouettes were posted on Starship's official Twitter along with a caption "Debut! Coming Soon!" Starship Entertainment then started to tease about the new girl group by releasing unit teasers every week, with each letter of WJSN representing a unit consisting of three members.[2] On December 10, the first unit called "Wonder Unit" was revealed, consisting of members Cheng Xiao, Bona and Dayoung.[3] The second unit, called the "Joy Unit" was revealed the following week on December 17 with members Yeoreum, Eunseo and Xuanyi.[4] The third unit, the "Sweet Unit", was revealed on December 24 with members SeolA, Exy and Soobin. The final unit, "Natural Unit", was released on December 31, revealing members Meiqi, Luda and Dawon to the public for the first time.

On December 21, Cosmic Girls released a Christmas cover of "All I Want For Christmas Is You" by Mariah Carey through JuseTV's YouTube Channel.[5] The video was made up with eight member had revealed in public: Cheng Xiao, Bona, Dayoung, Eunseo, SeolA, Exy, Meiqi and Dawon with four members: SeolA, Dayoung, Dawon and Meiqi taking part in the vocals.

On January 2, 2016, Dawon, Cheng Xiao, Xuanyi, Exy, and Eunseo made cameos in Uniq's New Year music video.

On January 10, 2016, Starship Entertainment started releasing "Play-File" teasers, with a different member's teaser released every day.

On January 20, 2016, SeolA, Exy, Bona, Eunseo, Xuanyi, and Cheng Xiao did their first photoshoot for Cosmopolitan Korea's February issue in the article "Next Body Icon, Cosmic Girls!", which showcases their sweet yet mature side.[6]

On February 1, 2016 Eunseo made cameo in Yoo Seung-woo's "Whatever" music video along with label mate Boyfriend's Jeongmin and Monsta X's Kihyun.[7]

2016: Debut with Would You Like?

Cosmic Girls released their debut mini album Would You Like? with double title tracks "Mo Mo Mo" and "Catch Me" on February 25, 2016. The first title track music video "Mo Mo Mo", which featured Lee Kwang-soo, was released on February 24.[8] "Mo Mo Mo" also both released on Korean version and Chinese version. The group made official debut stage at M Countdown on February 25.[9] The second title track music video "Catch Me" was released on March 9.[10]
