2015–16 Cupa Ligii

The Cupa Ligii (English: League Cup) is Romania's secondary club football tournament. Like the Cupa României, it is played on a knockout (single elimination) basis. Only teams from the Romanian top division are allowed to take part. It is currently managed by the Liga Profesionistă de Fotbal. It is unclear when it was created, as there are no official recordings. It probably started sometime after 1990, but there may already have been an edition as early as 1978. Cupa Ligii was meant to shorten the break between the end of the league season and the start of a major international competition. It was last played in 2000, after which it was dropped. Before 2014–15 season, the competition had a friendly character. On the 8th of April 2014, it was taken the decision to restart the competition, this time with official character, following the 2014–15 season. Currently, the winner of the Cupa Ligii is not granted a place in the UEFA Europa League, but receives 350,000. The cup is sponsored by AdePlast, a company that produces building materials, hence the name Cupa Ligii AdePlast.[1]
