Czech Republic–Philippines relations refer to foreign relations between Czech Republic and the Philippines. The Czech Republic has an embassy in Manila and the Philippines has an embassy in Prague.
History
Czech Jesuits (incl. the famous botanist Georg Joseph Kamel) were the first Czechs to visit the Philippines, writing first texts on the local flora and fauna. José Rizal was the first Filipino to visit Prague, the capital of the Czech Kingdom, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, visiting his friend Ferdinand Blumentritt, on the north of Bohemia. The Czechs were the only nation whose community to volunteered in 1941 to defend the country from the Japanese invasion, with 50% of them dying during the war.
Relations
The Philippines has recently signed the Agreement on Cooperation in the Fields of Culture, Education, Science and Sports in 2013. Deputy Prime Minister Schwarzenberg visited Manila as both countries prepare to commemorate the 40th anniversary of their formal bilateral relations in 2013.[1]
The Department of National Defense signed the establishment of Joint Defense Commission with the Czech Republic on May 26, 2014.
Czech Republic is the Philippines 24th largest export market and the 8th biggest in Europe with bilateral trade amounting to $300 million from January to November in the year 2011.[2]
