Darrick E. Antell M.D. F.A.C.S. is a diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery and an official spokesperson for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. He served as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons for over 20 years. In 2014, Dr. Antell was appointed as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.[1] Dr. Antell is also a professor of Plastic Surgery at the American University of Antigua having been appointed on July 1, 2010.
Career
Dr. Antell is a board certified plastic surgeon who maintains a private practice in Manhattan.[2] Besides having an internationally renowned practice in Manhattan for over 25 years, Dr. Antell is perhaps best known for having operated on more identical siblings (twins) than any other plastic surgeon in the world. His published studies include work on studying different face lift techniques as well as evaluating the effects of lifestyle choices on aging in identical twins.[3] Most importantly, he looked at smoking, excess sun exposure and stress which all accelerate the aging process.
Research and Twins Studies
Much of Antell's research has focused on furthering our understanding of the factors that contribute most to how people age. By eliminating genetic differences between the patients studied, Antell's group was able to see how environmental factors such as smoking, sun exposure and stress affect the aging process. Ultimately, his groundbreaking study was published with dramatic photos in the Annals of Plastic Surgery in December 1999. The stunning photos confirmed that lifestyle choices demonstrated a more profound effect on physical aging than genetics alone. These findings have most recently been acknowledged by the Smithsonian Institution and Antell's work was displayed within the Human Genome Exhibit [4] organized by the National Museum of Natural History at the Smithsonian and the National Human Genome Research Institute.
Antell's studies have been widely reported within scientific journals, consumer publications and broadcast by major national media, such as Good Morning America. As one of the official spokespersons for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Antell has been interviewed on all the major TV talk shows including Good Morning America, The Today Show, The Early Show, and even Jay Leno.[5][6][7][8] He is frequently quoted in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and other major news outlets.[9][10][11]
Education
Antell is a graduate of Hobart College and Case Western Reserve University from which he received his DMD. After receiving his medical degree from the Medical University of Ohio at Toledo, Antell did his surgical training at Stanford University Medical Center. He then completed his specialty training in plastic and reconstructive surgery at New York Hospital/Cornell Medical Center and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan. Antell was Chief Resident in Plastic Surgery at the NY Hospital from 1986 to 1987.
In September 2000, Dr. Randolph Guthrie Jr entrusted his practice to Antell. Guthrie was past Chief of Plastic Surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and he was one of the earliest pioneers of breast reconstruction.
Guthrie limited his private practice exclusively to the breast: including reductions, augmentations and reconstruction. Prior to his retirement, Guthrie had one of the most successful practices in New York. He attended St. Paul's School in New Hampshire, and graduated from Andover, followed by Princeton and then Harvard Medical School. He mentored and trained Antell at The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center (now called New York-Presbyterian, the University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell). In the words of Guthrie, in speaking with Antell: "A lot of people have offered me money for my practice, but I think it is unethical to sell it to the highest bidder. I would like to give you the practice at no charge as I think you are the best doctor." Guthrie's father was a law partner of former President Richard Nixon. Antell is among a very small number of board certified plastic surgeons in the entire country who possess a dual degree as both a Medical Doctor (MD) and a Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD). This additional training, completed before his time in medical school, gives Antell a unique combination of expertise of facial anatomy as well as the meticulous skills of dentistry.
Personal life
He is married to Elizabeth Antell, with whom he has five children.
