In Ireland, the Data Protection Commissioner (Irish: An Coimisinéir Cosanta Sonraí) is the person responsible for the enforcement and monitoring of compliance with data protection legislation, including the Data Protection Act of Ireland, 1988-2003. She is also responsible for investigating breaches of the legislation and prosecuting the senders of spam emails and text messages pursuant to SI 535/2003. Only one such prosecution has occurred to date. It is the national data protection authority for Ireland.

In the UK, this function is carried out by the Information Commissioner.
