David Huckabee (born 1981) is an American mortgage broker[3] and one of 2016 presidential candidate Mike Huckabee's two sons. David Huckabee's wife Lauren, an attorney, worked on Mike Huckabee's campaign for president, having registered Mike as a candidate[4] and having served as "Ballot Access and Delegate Director".[5] Both David and Lauren Huckabee have been listed as payees for the Mike Huckabee campaign.[6]

Education

Huckabee attended Arkansas State University (ASU) where he majored in political science and served as president of both the Union Advisory Board and the Student Government Association.[7] He ran two companies while at ASU, "Pyro Erectus" and "H&K Enterprises", each of which had contracts with ASU for more than $5000.00.[8] When the City of Jonesboro warned him to register those two companies, he initially refused, on the grounds that these entities were "partnerships" which did not need to register.[9] He eventually paid the $62.50 fee with 6,250 pennies.[8] Huckabee joined the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity and his father then Gov. Mike Huckabee followed suit, joining in 2007.[10]

While a freshman at ASU, Huckabee said in an interview with the school newspaper that he chose to go to school in Arkansas so he could get involved in the state's political process.[11] Huckabee said, "my dream is to either be the President or to be the one who makes the President the President."[11]

Boy Scouts controversy

During his father's 2008 presidential campaign, both Newsweek and the Los Angeles Times reported that the younger Huckabee had been dismissed as a Boy Scout camp counselor in 1998.[12][13] Huckabee, then 17, was alleged to have been involved in the hanging of a stray dog.[12]

When an animal rights group sought records from the Arkansas state police the request was denied. John Bailey, the then-police chief reported that "(Mike Huckabee's) chief of staff and personal lawyer both pressured him to write a letter officially denying the local prosecutor's request."[12] Mike Huckabee fired Bailey seven months later. In December 2007, Bailey told Newsweek that the governor told him "I've lost confidence in your ability to do your job" and "I couldn't get you to help me with my son when I had that problem."[12]

Mike Huckabee flatly denied Bailey's account.[12] He insisted his son did not engage in "intentional torture." A campaign official said that David Huckabee "regrets the incident."[12]

Arrest

Huckabee was arrested at 6:00 AM,[14] on April 26, 2007, for attempting to board a plane departing from Little Rock, Arkansas, with a loaded Glock handgun.[15] A misdemeanor charge was brought against him for "attempting to carry a gun in a prohibited place." Huckabee had a concealed-weapon permit at the time of the incident and said he forgot about the weapon in his luggage. A Little Rock Police lieutenant was quoted as saying, "It is not unusual for people to forget they have a gun in their carry-on luggage."[14] He entered a guilty plea with the court.[15] He received a one-year suspended sentence with 10 days of community service.[16]
