Declan Power is a former Irish Army soldier, author and defence analyst.

Power grew up in Mullingar, County Westmeath and attended Presentation Convent and Saint Mary's College (CBS) in the town.

He joined the Army Reserve (then FCA) 9th Field Artillery Regiment based in Mullingar, a garrison town, with the intention of joining the Garda Síochána or Permanent Defence Forces (PDF).[1]

He joined the permanent enlisted ranks of the Irish Army through the 1st Battalion in Galway, and attempted to gain a cadetship, which he did and attended the Military College at the Curragh Camp, however he was forced back through injury and was instead seconded to a reconnaissance unit based in Dublin which was actively working the the Gardaí and Irish Army units undertaking security operations on the border with Northern Ireland during The Troubles.[1]

Power later joined the Defence Forces Press Office as a Sergeant and undertook an honours degree in journalism at the Dublin City University (DCU) between 1994 and 1998.

After 12 years of military service, Power left the Defence Forces in 2000, completed postgraduate studies in International Peace and Conflict Studies at Trinity College, Dublin and has served in various consultancy roles with the United Nations (including OCHA and UNHCR), the European Union and Irish Aid.

Power is a contributing journalist to publications such as the Irish Defence Forces' official magazine, An Cosantóir, The Sunday Business Post and Jane's Intelligence Review. He has also authored the books; Siege of Jadotville and Beyond the Call of Duty.[2]
