The House of Enlightenment, Denis Diderot or La Maison des Lumières Denis Diderot (common acronym MLDD) is housed in the Hotel du Breuil de Saint Germain located in Langres (Champagne-Ardenne region) built in the sixteenth century and rebuilt in the eighteenth century. The museum is dedicated to Denis Diderot the French philosopher, writer, art critic, and his work the Encyclopédie ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers.

The museum design of the La Maison des Lumières was designed by Atelier à Kiko[1] and the garden of the museum by landscape architect Louis Benech (* 1957).[2]

The house is organized in 10 themed rooms, salle including a chronology of the 'Enlightenment', Denis Diderot in Langres and his läter life in Paris the City of Light, Diderot's journey to Russia, Diderot and art criticism, theater criticism, Diderot and music, furthermore the Encyclopedia.

  • Salle 8 : L’Encyclopédie. – Typographic design - his boards - its printing and binding - his numbers and how to use it - its editors.
  • Salle 9 : L’Encyclopédie. – reference book - the contents of the Encyclopedia: mathematics - natural sciences - cutlery - the earthenware.
  • Salle 10 : L’atelier des Lumières. – Temporary exhibition.

General Information

Dates and Times of opening (2014):

  • summertime (April to September): Tuesday to Sunday from 9 am to 12 pm and from 2 pm to 7 pm.
  • wintertime (October to March): Tuesdays to Sundays from 9 am to 12 pm and from 2 pm to 5 pm.

The explanations of the exhibits are not multilingual but an audio guide can be used. This audio guide informed within the meaning of Diderot et sa ville available in Dutch, English, French or German (2013).[3]
