Don't Breathe is a 2016 American horror thriller film directed by Fede Alvarez and written by Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues. The film stars Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette, Daniel Zovatto and Stephen Lang. The film is scheduled to be released on August 26, 2016, by Screen Gems and Stage 6 Films.

Synopsis

Rocky, a teenage delinquent living with neglectful parents, promises her younger sister to move away with her. Looking for the right amount of cash to run away with in order to do so. Her boyfriend, Money, convinces her to break into the home of a blind man who supposedly has a safe in the basement. Breaking in the middle of the night with her friend Alex, they discover the blind man is really a serial killer with heightened hearing who hunts intruders in his house. After Rocky and Alex outsmart the blind man once he kills Money, the two must navigate themselves out of the locked apartment while being quiet enough to avoid him.

Production

On October 30, 2014, it was announced Fede Alvarez would direct the film.[5] On May 1, 2015, Daniel Zovatto joined the cast.[4] On May 22, 2015, Dylan Minnette was cast in the film.[3] On June 18, 2015, Jane Levy and Stephen Lang joined the cast.[2] Principal photography began on June 29, 2015.[6] Though the film is set in Detroit, it was primarily shot in Hungary; only a few shots of the Detroit ruins were shot in that city.[1]

Release

The film premiered at South by Southwest on March 12, 2016.[1] The film is scheduled to be released on August 26, 2016, by Screen Gems.[7]

Reception

Critical response

On Rotten Tomatoes the film has a rating of 78%, based on 9 reviews, with an average rating of 6.7/10.[8] Dennis Harvey of Variety called Don't Breathe "a muscular exercise in brutal, relentless peril that should please genre fans," but criticized its "uninspiring" title.[1]
