School songs

Both the Dorman Alma Mater and the Dorman Fight Song are original compositions - lyrics and music written/composed by the music faculty at Dorman in its early years. It was their belief that the new school needed original songs. While many high schools use altered lyrics for one of the many college alma maters or fight songs, you will never hear the Dorman alma mater or fight song sung/played for any other school!

Hail, Alma Mater
Praises proudly sing
Of all the memories
Our school days bring.
Founded on Dignity,
Honor and Liberty,
Gave knowledge to us all,
Hail to Dorman High. [1]

Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight for Dorman
Win! Win! Win! Never Fear
Plunge right through and make that
Touchdown Cavaliers!
All for one, one for all;
We'll block that kick, take that ball.
Fight! Fight! Fight for Dorman
Cavaliers! [2]

Athletics and extracurricular activities

Dorman has football, basketball, baseball, soccer, lacrosse, volleyball, golf, tennis, cross country, swimming, track and field, wrestling, marching band, softball, and cheerleading teams which all play under the mascot of the Fighting Cavaliers. Dorman also has a nationally recognized quizbowl team. Since winning its first national title in 1989 under the leadership of the now-retired English teacher James W. Garrick, the Dorman High School Academic Team has won five national championships, four of those under the tutelage of former coach and U.S. history teacher Eric Huff. The cheerleading team won the State Championship in 2007 and came in first runner-up in 2008, both under Coach Kami Appleton. The tennis team won its first state championship in 2011 under Coach Sam Napier. Dorman's baseball team is now ran under former Point University coach Jesse Dyar.[3]

Traditions

Dorman has heated rivalries with cross-town Spartanburg High School as well as nearby Byrnes High School.

Every year, Dorman students celebrate "Farmers Day" to commemorate the annual football game against Spartanburg High School. The tradition originates from Dorman's more rural placement and students as opposed to Spartanburg High School's traditionally more urban and affluent students, who would refer cajolingly to Dorman students as "farmers." Students typically take their vehicles "mudding" or "mud-slinging" in the days before the game in an outward display of rural pride and proclivity and wear overalls to school to celebrate a culture rooted in farming. School officials typically accommodate the observance of these activities by, for example, providing alternate parking for muddy trucks.

In 2009, Dorman defeated Byrnes High School 28-17 for the South Carolina State Championship in football. The teams met again during the next season on October 29, 2010 in a nationally televised rematch on ESPNU. Although Dorman has lost the past two years to cross-town rival Spartanburg High school, they continue the mudding tradition

Fine arts

The high school has three theater classrooms and five different drama courses. The Dorman High School Marching Cavaliers are ranked seventh in the state of South Carolina and twenty-second nationally. The Dorman High School Drum Line consistently ranks first in the state of South Carolina. Dorman Drumline ranks fifth worldwide according to the Winter Guard International (WGI) tournament.[citation needed].
