Elaine Quijano is an American reporter for the television network CBS.[1]

Early life and education

Quijano is an American of Filipino descent. She grew up in the Skokie and Morton Grove suburbs of Chicago, Illinois.[2] She received a bachelor's degree in journalism in 1995 from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign.[3][4][5][6]

Career

Quijano was a reporter/producer/anchor for WCIA-TV in Champaign, Illinois. She started there as an intern, while still in college, having been interviewed by a University of Illinois alumnus.[7] Later, she was a general assignment reporter for WFTS-TV in Tampa, Florida.[8]

She was a correspondent for CNN for nine years. Initially, Quijano was a correspondent for CNN Newsource starting in December, 2000.[9] She covered Newsource's round-the-clock coverage of the September 11, 2001 attacks, and traveled to Kuwait City just days before the U.S. launched its invasion of Iraq in 2003,[10] and reported in Kuwait for a month.[9] She has also filed reports on the Beltway sniper attacks in Washington, DC [9] involving Lee Boyd Malvo and John Allen Muhammad.

Quijano was in Washington, DC for CNN starting in January[9] 2006.[1] She covered the 2004 re-election campaign of President George W. Bush and the campaign of Vice Presidential candidate John Edwards. Later, she covered the White House. In this capacity, she covered the administration of President Barack Obama, traveling to Boston to report on the arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., which President Obama called a "teachable moment" after the President initially blamed the police then took a more objective position after exculpatory evidence about the police was revealed.[8]

She left CNN on December 23, 2009.[11]

Quijano began as a news correspondent with CBS News in January, 2010.[12]

She is based in New York and her television reports appear on "CBS This Morning", "The CBS Evening News" and "CBS Sunday Morning".[3]

In 2009, she was the Convocation Speaker at the UIUC College of Media.[5]
