Burkina Faso elects on national level a head of state - the president - and a legislature. The president is elected for a five-year term by the people. The National Assembly (Assemblée Nationale) has 111 members, elected for a five-year term by proportional representation.

2015 Elections

General elections were due to be held on 11 October 2015. However, on 16 September the now disbanded Regiment of Presidential Security (RSP) staged a coup d'état, and held the capital, Ouagadougou, for about a week.[1]
